And this year I was delighted to see that they have a team of personal trainers, who, like me, all health conscious. For their main they made my new favourite obsession. Kale Chips. I mean, they did burn them so that they ended up not serving them, which is a shame because I’m sure they would have changed everyones opinion on health food if they had. I made these for our movie night and again for our cooking class as a part of Foodie Feb and they were a hit!

Kale is related to cabbage and is a powerhouse of nutrients. Kale is high in fibre, iron, calcium, antioxidants, vitamins K, C and A, is great for detoxing and cardiovascular health. So obviously these chips are a much better companion to watch a movie with than popcorn or potato chips.

Kale Chips ?
makes a GIANT bowl

2 bunches organic kale ?
2 teaspoons Himalayan salt
?3 tablespoons olive oil ?
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese (optional)

Heat your fan forced oven to 150degC Strip the leaves off the kale stems (don’t throw away the stems, instead use them in place of asparagus). Wash the leaves and then dry them with paper towel or in a salad spinner. Place the leaves in a bowl and toss with salt, olive oil and parmesan (if using). Place them on a lined baking tray in one layer (make sure its only one layer or the chips will steam and not crisp up) and bake for 15-20min until crisp to touch. These don’t store well, so eat them quick!

I think I’m onto a winner here with the green smoothie thing.

This recipe is creamier and more filling with the addition of almond milk, than the last, which was fresher and based on water.

I personally like this one better, but Jacob preferes the last one.

Either way, you can’t go wrong with a little fruit and lots of green veg. This is an awesome vegan smoothie and the addition of protein makes it super filling. An awesome quick breakfast. And please, remember to ALWAYS go organic with those green leafy veg.

Leandra’s Green Protein Smoothie

Serves 2 or 1 very hungry person
Based on this recipe I found on pinterest.

100g organic baby spinach
1 frozen banana, (chopped up before you freeze it)
3 tablespoons pea protein, vanilla flavoured
1 tablespoon organic peanut butter
1 cup organic almond milk

Place all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high until smooth.
Delicious.

It’s a great way to get a whole lot of good for you veggies into your system.

But recently I met a man who’s life, and that of his wives, was changed by green smoothies. His wive, the founder of Cheeky Chimp Smoothies in Melbourne, suffered a stroke at age 39, and with the aid of green smoothies, turned her and her husbands life and health around. He and I had a nice long talk over a lunch, where he BEGGED me to try green smoothies in place of my green juice. This was months ago and during my pregnancy, I went off green juice, they just did nor sit right with me, making me feel queezy, I put it down to the detoxifying effect that may have not been the best thing for Asha. But now that she is safely out in the world, I am back onto the juice band wagon. And I decided that I would give the smoothie thing a go. So I hopped on the internet to find some inspiration. Alas I din’t have the ingredients for any of the smoothies listed on my friends wives website so I had to make one up of my own. And it wasn’t half bad. Give my recipe a go, I have to admit, it was quite delicious, and Jacob actually liked it MORE than my green juice.

Leandra’a Green Smoothie

150g frozen organic blueberries
1 banana
small handful of mint
small bunch of parsley
small organic lebanese cucumber, skin on
4 stalks organic rainbow chard
2 dates

Place all the ingredients into a blender, top up with a cup of filtered water and blend. Will make about a litre of juice, plenty for a snack later in the day.

So 8 weeks ago I had a baby and although most of the pregnancy was smooth sailing, Asha (like her parents) was a little stubborn in making her entrance.

Now the first thing to remember is that babies come in their own time, not in OUR time, no mater how much you plead with them. It is quite normal for bubs to be born at 40 weeks plus or minus 2 weeks (ie. form 38-42 weeks) so don’t panic if your little one doesn’t shoot out on the exact date your OBGYN has given you as only 5% of babies are born “on time”.

But if you are over 40 weeks, and the thought of an medical induction in looming, you might want to give a few of these a go.

***NOTE: we tried ALL of these and nothing worked, some babies, like ours, will not be rushed, and that’s ok too***

RELAX!! Hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are produced when we stress, these hormones will slow or even stop the natural labour process, so take a deep breath, do some pregnancy yoga, take a bath and a walk and a nap and trust that your body and your baby know what they are doing.

Aromatherapy. Oils such as Lavender and Sage will indice uterine contractions, which is why they tell you not to go smelling them early on in pregnancy .

Spicy Food. The theory here is that by irritating you bowels a little you can “nudge” the uterus along. Same goes for Caster oil, which can induce terrible diarrhea so I wouldn’t recommend it at all, I didn’t even try it, best stick with a nice Vindaloo.

Sex. Semen is a natural prostoglandidn, which helps ripen the cervix. You will need to let your cervix “bathe” in the semen though, so after making love pop your legs up in the air as best you can and keep them there for about 20 minutes. Sharing this amount of closeness with your partner also causes your body to release oxytosin, the cuddle hormone, which will cause the uterus to contract. Orgasms also do this, so hop to it! I have also read that semen’s prostaglandin effect is better absorbed by the body via the gut…so do with that information what you will.

Nipple Stimulation. Again with the oxytosin. This apparently has a 70% success rate. You should stimulate your nipples, one at a time. Rub the aureola (the dark bit around your nipple) in circles for 20 seconds, then switch. Do this once every 3 minutes.

Evening Primrose Oil. Helps to ripen the cervix. Spilt open a capsule and squirt it right up there onto your cervix. As with the semen, let it sit there for at least 20 mintes.

Vigorous and Hard Low back Massage. Helps to relieve any tension in your lower back, add some lavender oil for good measure.

Chiropractic Adjustments. If the bones of your spine and pelvis aren’t moving correctly, it can cause nerve irritation that impedes good communication between your uterus and brain and can interfere with labour starting. Also getting your pelvis in the right position to allow bubs to move right down into your pelvis and put pressure on your cervix to help your membranes to rupture.

Running, hanging on monkey bars, star jumps, walking down flights of stairs. All these are about getting babies head to push down on the cervix and hopefully get your waters to break.

Homeopathics. These can be very useful in bringing on labour, but never self medicate, organise to see a registered Homeopath.

Visualize. The human mind is a very powerful thing. Take soem time each day to meditate and visualize yourself going into labour and having your ideal birth.

Pineapple. This tropical fruit contains Bromelain, which can help kick start labour. Juice a whole fresh pineapple including the core to get the most Bromelain out of the fruit.

Raspberry leaf tea. It tastes like grass, but it helps soften the cervix.

Acupuncture. Again very powerful. In old school China, however, they traditionally will not needle a pregnant woman for fear of damaging the baby and/or mother. So if you have a an old school Chinese trained acupuncturist, like I do, they may not oblige.

Acupressure points. With each of these points, your partner needs to apply firm, sustained pressure for several minutes (up to 10) every hour until labour is established or waters have broken. If you are unsure, ask your Chiropractor, Midwife or Acupuncturist to show you and your partner.
